The 100 Envelope Challenge, explained
Number 100 envelopes from 1 to 100. Each day, pull one (or two) at random and put that many dollars inside. Envelope 34 = $34. When all 100 are filled you'll have saved $5,050 — without ever deciding "how much should I save this month."
Why it works
- Randomness kills decision fatigue. Broke week? You might pull $3. Flush week? $97. You keep going either way.
- Visible progress is addictive. A filling grid is a dopamine loop that budgets never give you.
- It's finite. 100 envelopes ends — unlike "budget forever," you can actually win.
How to actually finish it
Most people quit around day 20 when the novelty fades. Three fixes: pull two envelopes on paydays and none on rough days (pace beats streaks); track visually so missed days look recoverable, not fatal; and tell one person you're doing it.
